The new year is here and it’s not too late to adopt a resolution if you haven’t already. Some of us might like to focus on fitness, eating habits, or quitting unhealthy habits we already have… But have you considered adopting a resolution as a family? Decide as a family to go green in 2020 and use these five tips to get you started.

1. Hang thermal curtains

Provide some measuring tape and offer up a quick at-home project for the kids when you send them to confirm the measurements of each window of the house. You can assign the role of measurement taker, note jotter, and more- and then head to the store to find thermal curtains for your home’s windows.

Using thermal curtains will save on energy (and your electric bill!) by keeping the cool air inside during the summer and outside during the winter. When you use thermal curtains, it provides an extra layer of insulation from any possible air-draft in the windows. Studies have shown that thermal curtains can prevent heat loss up to 25% more than other window treatments during the winter months!

2. Air dry the laundry

Forgo the dryer during laundry duty and save even more energy. Air-drying clothes can save up to $100 a year on your energy bill and reduce your household’s carbon footprint by 2,400 pounds a year! The kids can help bring the laundry to hang or the family can pitch in together. If you haven’t introduced chores yet, this would be the perfect time to involve the kids and consider setting up an allowance or rewards system

3. Switch to LED bulbs

Something that even the toddlers can pitch in on- counting lightbulbs! Travel room-to-room and take note of the light bulbs that aren’t already LED. Make the quick and simple switch and save not only on your family’s carbon footprint, but also decrease your spending on light bulbs since they last longer and cost less to use!

4. Stop phantom energy

Create a family rule to “unplug it!” If an electric device isn’t in use or being charged, go ahead and unplug it. Phantom, or vampire, energy is what happens when a device is plugged into the wall but not in use– and it can suck up about 200-300 watts a month, which translates into about $25/month in your energy bill.

5. Reliant Pick Your Free

An easy way to ensure your family is saving all that they can on their electric bill is with “Pick Your Free” from Reliant! Brand new in 2020, Reliant is empowering customers with an entirely new way to help them choose which electricity plan makes the most sense for their family. With Pick Your Free, customers are encouraged to choose one of Reliant’s three free electricity plans that best align with the family’s lifestyle and needs.

  • Reliant Truly Free 7 Days+ Google Nest Hub offers free electricity for the seven highest usage days every monthly billing cycle. Truly Free 7 Days appeals to frequent travelers, shift workers or stay-at-home parents who often have fluctuating schedules.
  • Reliant Truly Free Weekends+ Google Nest Hub offers free electricity every weekend, from 8 p.m. Friday to 12 a.m. Monday. Truly Free Weekends appeals to those who spend their weekends at home binge-watching, meal-prepping, having family and friends over, and catching up on laundry.
  • Reliant Truly Free Nights+ Google Nest Hub offers free electricity every night, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Truly Free Nights appeals to those who are night owls and enjoy the simple pleasure of sleeping extra cool on warm Texas nights.

I really like their new plan Reliant Truly Free 7 Days plan that automatically gives you free electricity on your seven highest usage days every monthly billing cycle. And when the entire family is more aware of their energy usage as a whole, you not only save energy, but you’ll save money too!

Use these 5 steps to get your family started in going green this year and keep adding more ideas throughout the year. Your family will have a chance to bond in a shared mission and take the time to discuss why it’s important to be environmentally conscious as a family. By the time 2021 rolls around, the world will be a little greener- all thanks to you!
