The White Board: Not Just for the Office

In our age of technology, with so many devices and gadgets at our fingertips to “help” us stay on time, on track and organized, I find myself gravitating back to simpler means and methods. For example, the white board.

When I say white board, I’m talking about dry erase boards. I have three in my home that I use all the time. How?

Calendar

One board has the days of the week and squares pre-printed on it, allowing me to fill in the month and dates. This is great for writing down appointments, meetings and playdates. My husband tries to send me calendar invites to my smart phone, but I just can’t be bothered. I ask him what he’s got going on and then I write it on the board. I can look at it in a glance instead of trying to unlock, tap, swipe, etc. etc. on my phone. Easy peasy.

Shopping List 

Mount a white board in your kitchen. Write down the items you need to pick up at the store. When shopping day comes, take a picture of your board on your phone and, boom. Instant shopping list. This also allows other people in the house to add items as well. 

Learning Activities

My three-year-old has been scribbling on a white board since he was old enough to sit up. The board is perfect for helping a child recognize numbers, letters and colors. As he gets older, he can practice reading, writing or drawing. When he makes a mistake or wants to start over, a simple swipe with an eraser is all it takes. For the most part, I have found dry erase marker stains come out of kid clothes pretty easily. However, you can always have your little one wear a play shirt. 

Pro Tip

Dry erase markers can be found at dollar stores, so you can stock up. 

Sometimes keeping things simple is the best way to stay on top of things.
