Communication: Our Key to a Happy Marriage

1

Carmona WeddingMy husband and I have four children and we are in the (what I would describe) as the HARDEST SEASON OF OUR LIVES right now. Our oldest is four years old and the youngest is eleven months old so life is hectic, crazy and extremely loud in our home.

The days seem extremely long and I pray for bedtime to come quickly almost daily. With those long days come overwhelming emotions (as you can imagine), and there are times when I just want to scream and cry (sometimes I do both.) These difficulties make me thankful for my husband and our marriage.

One thing that I love about my marriage is that I can communicate these hard emotions to my husband as often as I need too. Sometimes I don’t even use words. I just ask for a big hug because I love my husband’s hugs and his massive, muscular arms. I feel extremely safe in them.

Communication with your spouse is so important, especially when you have children. My relationship with my spouse was established long before children came into the picture and our relationship will be there long after the children leave the nest. so I want to make sure that we keep our lines of communication open. Here are some things that we do that has helped us in terms of communication.

Date Nights!!!!!

One thing we always do is have date nights! We try to do them at least once a month. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND DOING THIS. Spending quality, uninterrupted time with your spouse is key to a healthy relationship, plus it’s just romantic.

Listen First, Give Advice Later!!!

One thing I did not like when we first got married was that my husband was always trying to solve my problems before I was able to fully communicate to him what those were. It resulted in me shutting down and not talking at all, but I finally was able to express to him that there were times when I just needed to talk without him telling me anything. Then, after I had cooled off, he would give me suggestions or tips to help my situation or concerns.

Show Affection!!!

Like I mentioned above, I love my husband’s hugs and I love it when he holds my hand. Sometimes him showing just a little bit of affection towards me makes a huge difference in my moods and it’s a great nonverbal communication skill every married couple should embrace!

Make time to thank your spouse for being your ‘partner in crime’ as you both raise your children up in this beautiful mess we live in. Tell each other you ‘I love you’ on a daily basis and be thankful!
