Moving with Small Children

I’m sure you’ve all heard the cliché expression “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”  By that definition my friends, I am officially insane.

Moving with Small Children- Corpus Christi Moms Blog

For the last couple of weeks, I have been doing my regular stay-at-home-mom duties as well as packing up my house – with a two-year-old and a three-month-old.  I pack one box, the baby cries. I tend to baby, and my two-year-old decides that my packed box is now her treasure chest; I re-pack my box and move on to the next. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat.  I can feel the insanity creeping into my veins. I’ve started labeling boxes and my daughter seems to always find the boxes with her name on it.  Her most recent conquest was opening the box labeled “Eleanor’s Toys.” I should be proud that she recognizes her name, right? For packing purposes… wrong!!

Life has been anything but calm lately between painters and packing and road trips and hotel stays.

It’s the nomad life I once longed for. I often dreamed of growing up to be a successful nomad.  I wanted to travel and uproot myself over and over until I was too old to do so. (Clearly, I didn’t know what I was thinking.) Then, I married my husband and had my two kids; I am baffled by the positive influence that my children, my husband— my family, have over me every single day. We’re about to sell our house, and while at one point in my life this would have been the most exciting endeavor, I can’t help feeling a little bit sad at the prospect of selling our  ‘home.’ I understand that families successfully do this all the time, but I feel like I’m drowning.

Someone, please let me in on the secrets of moving with small children. Please!

My sincere hope is that this will be a one-time deal. I hope that we can move into our forever home.  I hope that my kids can find a group of permanent friends with whom they can share many great memories. I hope that they don’t ever have to change schools, and lastly, I hope that I never, never, never, ever have to pack a box again.

Have you ever moved with small children? How did you survive?
