Have you heard of “Crappy Dinner Parties”?

Tell me: Have you heard of a crappy dinner party?? And no, it doesn’t mean you serve crappy food for dinner! Ha!

 “Crappy dinner parties” are a concept I first heard about when my friend Molly shared the article “5 Rules for Hosting a Crappy Dinner Party (and Seeing Your Friends More Often)” written by Kelley Powell. In a nutshell, it’s a come-as-you-are, eat-what-we-have, ignore-the-mess shindig.

Whaaaat???? We were hooked!

You see just a few days before Molly shared the article her and her family had come over to our house for the first time. I spent the whole day prior cleaning and getting on to my family for messing up my perfectly clean and somewhat staged house. It was stressful not only for me but for them too!

In all honesty it is not something I could do often. Clean and keep the whole house clean for a party or even for friends to simply pop over. I have three boys 6 and under and we homeschool so we spend 90% of our time at home, you can imagine what our house looks like on a regular basis! Definitely not worthy of a  magazine spread!

Right after she shared the article Molly invited us to an impromptu Crappy Dinner Party – she is one to walk the walk! And guess what? It was LOVELY! The kids had fun, the adults had fun, we ate delicious wings (which is what she had planned to make for her family so no special shopping or prep work), the wings were prepped and cooked while we all sat in the dining room chatting and having a good time! They were delicious!

The house not having been specially cleaned or staged beforehand  DID NOT impact the quality of the time we spent together! Success!

There are many more Crappy Dinner/lunch/playdate parties in our future!

Thank you, Molly, for introducing me to this liberating concept and for throwing the first of hopefully many more. It’s my turn next! I do promise to clean our guest bathroom aka the boys’ bathroom though. {Yikes! Am I right boy Mamas? LOL}

What do you think?  Is a crappy dinner party something you find liberating and want to incorporate into your life or is it anxiety-inducing and can’t imagine having people over without previous planning?
