Blaze: A Toddler Craze

0

Getting our son to sleep has always been a challenge. As a newborn, he had severe eczema that kept him awake and miserable. He also had severe reflux that made for lots of crying and messy moments. And as he got older, the struggles continued. Finally, a few months ago, my husband and I threw our hands up and did what we swore would never happen. We took the path of least resistance.

We started cosleeping.

When we aren’t getting kicked in the face or jabbed in the ribs, cosleeping is sweet. It’s nice having the family together. But at the same time, now that we’re here, we’re unsure how or when we’ll work our son back into his own room. So when I successfully napped him in his bed this week, it was a big deal! A huge milestone! And I wanted to encourage more of that. So I decided it was time for him to upgrade him to big boy sheets.

Together, my son and I ventured out to ToysRUs. On the way there, he kept saying he wanted dinosaur sheets. But we didn’t find any. Instead, we found something, to use my son’s words, “so cool!

We found Blaze bed sheets.

I had never heard of Blaze and the Monster Machines, but the red monster truck was cute and seemed harmless enough. So, I went ahead and bought the sheets, as well as a couple Blaze videos. After all, if we’re gonna “go Blaze,” we might as well “go Blaze” like we mean it. I also bought some Cars stickers to put on the wall because, well, there weren’t Blaze stickers.

When we got home, I watched a Blaze video with my son while I washed his new sheets. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the show actually incorporated learning and fun songs as well as “cool” entertainment. We’ve only seen a few videos but are already learning about concepts like wedges, angles, and volume! But at a simple, introductory level that’s fun and easy to understand.

When the new big boy sheets were clean, my son did a running dance to his bed and “cool” new sheets. We put Cars stickers on the wall. The nursery was no longer so. Now he had a big boy room!

But the obsession with Blaze has grown, and to be honest, I’m not sure whether it is his or mine. I purchased Blaze toddler underwear, Blaze socks, and a Blaze toy storage shelf. I’m determined to make our son’s room a fun place to play, but also hopelessly wonder if it might solve all our problems from the potty and sleep training to toy clutter.

I’m not sure how long the obsession will last, but my son’s loving Blaze and so am I. It’s so much fun watching him enjoy something he loves!

But, in case you’re wondering, he has yet to sleep in his big boy bed again…
