5 Things I’ve Learned Since Becoming a Stay-At-Home Mom

1

About a year and a half ago I made the decision to become a full-time stay at home mom. I left my well paying 9-5 job in the medical records world in a leap of faith to devote my life entirely to my family. It absolutely did not make any sense financially, but I knew this was what I needed to do for my family and so I did. God has always provided for us ever since.

While the jump start of my new journey as a stay at home mom was exciting at first, it was abruptly challenged with overwhelming emotions, long days of trying to keep my toddler out of the kitchen pantry, and what seemed to be a non-stop breastfeeding marathon to an infant.

It. Was. An. Adjustment.

The reality is that being a stay at home mom is the farthest thing from what I would rather be doing. Don’t get me wrong, I am so incredibly grateful for the opportunity to stay at home with my children, I’m aware that there are working moms who wish they could be in my position. What I mean is that my entire personality as a whole screams: “Business, work, go out and get it.” So, being a stay at home mom does not exactly fit into that description.

Isn’t it funny how God works, sometimes? He’ll place these dreams in our hearts and then put us in situations that completely contradict the reality of that dream. But, I truly believe He does this for a purpose and it’s to teach us things that we will use for that same promise.

Here are 5 things I’ve learned since becoming a stay at home mom.

1. Home-Making is an Important Job

Serving my family on a full-time basis has completely changed my perspective on the importance of creating an environment that allows everyone to thrive. There’s a quote by C.S. Lewis that says “The homemaker has the ultimate career. All other careers exist for one purpose only – and that is to support the ultimate career.” I’ve learned that being a stay at home mom is harder than any other job I’ve ever had. Cheers to stay at home mommas.

2. Time Management is Everything

Oh em gee. I didn’t realize how poor my time management skills were until I became a stay at home mom. Being at home all day with my little ones has really taught me to manage my time more efficiently (something I thought I had down.) It’s still an ongoing process and some days feel more like a blurr of spilled milk and Lion Guard, but we’re getting there.

3. Dry Shampoo Becomes Your Best Friend

Enough said.

4. You Start Appreciating Your Adult Relationships

Every conversation that doesn’t end in a debate over “why changing into a third set of pajamas is pointless” is always great. Plus, being able to eat a dinner without interruptions is just the cherry on top. I’ve come to appreciate the adults in my life much more after being around my tiny humans all day long.

5. Embrace Every Season

This last one is probably the most important thing I’ve learned since being a staying at home mom. My decision to stay at home came out of my own conviction to be available to my family during this season of our lives. I’ve learned that even though there’s many struggles in doing this, I’d much rather embrace it and enjoy it than contemplate other things I’d like to achieve.

There’s a season for everything and I’m blessed to embrace this one.

Are you a stay at home mom? What are some things you’ve learned along the way?

  1. “Business, work, go out and get it.”

As a working mom who recently experienced an interesting mental breakdown I’ve been thinking about the idea of being a stay at home mom for at least a short period of time. The thought of putting my dreams on hold to serve my baby boy and take care of my 5 month pregnant self haunts me even though I know it will only be temporary. Having a full on ambitious mentality and drive to advance in your career and education while being a mommy is challenging! Props to you and plenty of encouragement vibes heading your way. Your babies will appreciate all that you do.

Oh, and Dry Shampoo is the greatest invention yet that we moms all praise!
