Breast Cancer Sucks: Preventative Measures to Consider

0

2009 was an eventful year for me, to say the least. It was the year I graduated college with my Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. It was the year I married my amazing husband. And it was the year my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer.

My mom is now cancer-free and doing great, but that whole experience caused me to start researching and digging to find out if there really is something we can do to prevent cancer. I’m not doctor, but I do love research. And, as it turns out, there are numerous preventative measures we can take to protect our bodies against cancer.

Reduce Toxins

Toxins are all around us. Now, I realize there are some toxins and chemicals we can’t avoid, like fumes we breathe in the air every day, mild radiation we receive when going through airport security, cleaners used at the grocery store, etc. BUT there are plenty of ways we can rid our bodies of toxins and chemicals. We can start making our own cleaners with natural products, like essential oils and baking soda. We can use all natural body care products or make our own. We can buy organic fruits and vegetables and stay away from pesticides and herbicides.

Introduce a Healthy Diet

This may seem like old news, but I want to challenge you to truly watch what you eat. Studies show that a diet high in animal product increases one’s risk of cancer. I’m not saying eliminate animal product completely, but consider making organic fruits and vegetables the main portion of your diet. When you do add in animal product, avoid products that inject their animals with hormones and antibiotics.

Exercise

Exercise is a great way to rid your body of toxins. It can also help you keep a healthy weight, another way to reduce your risk of cancer. You don’t have to commit to an intense 7 day a week workout session. Watch how your body responds to even 3 days a week of a low impact exercise! Then do what is best for you.

Minimize Stress

We are highly impacted by the amount of stress we experience. High stress affects not just our emotions, but our physical bodies as well. Consider adding in time every day for a little bit of self-care. Use that time to meditate, take a bath with some Epsom salts, read an inspiring book or journal, or simply go on a walk. Your body will thank you for it.

These are just a few steps we can take to reduce our changes of getting cancer and other harmful diseases. Again, I’m not doctor, but if you begin to implement these practices you’ll start to feel like a whole new person. I’m not saying you’ll never get sick, but you will definitely lessen those chances, and feel much better in the process. Here’s to better health!
