Cinco de Mayo, the fifth of May, is the celebration of the Mexican army’s defeat of France in the Battle of Puebla in 1862 during the Franco-Mexican War.
The war lasted from 1861 to 1867, and the victory of the outnumbered Mexican army over the invading French forces strengthened the resolve of those fighting to protect their homeland, and eventually defeat the French.
Surprised? I was, too, after I started researching Cinco de Mayo. I knew it was the 5th of May, and that it was not a celebration of Mexican Independence Day, but after that, my knowledge was rather fuzzy. The story of the Battle of Puebla shows what an outnumbered group of determined people can accomplish when fighting for their homeland.
Now, over 150 years after that victory, Cinco de Mayo has morphed into a gala featuring live music, parades, food and other fun activities celebrating Mexican culture.

To actively participate in a Cinco de Mayo celebration, visit Heritage Park on Thursday, May 5th from 6-10pm, where the Westside Business Association will be holding their 5th Annual Cinco de Mayo celebration. Admission is free and features music, food truck, and vendors.
