Let’s Celebrate National Read Across America Day

0

National Read Across America Day is a fun way to promote reading with children.  It is celebrated on March 2nd, which is Dr. Seuss’s birthday and has been celebrated annually since 1998.  Many schools, libraries, and community centers observe this day each year, using it as a tool to encourage children to read and set reading goals.  If March 2nd falls on a weekend, most schools celebrate it the Friday before.

How can your family celebrate National Read Across America Day?

  • Pick up a book and read it with a child.  As a home school family, we are always reading something.  Either it’s a book from our curriculum or it’s a read-a-loud of some sort.  Currently we are reading “Augustus Caesar’s World,” and I might mention that we are enjoying it!  Reading is an important part of our school day.  Some days my throat gets croaky from all the reading!
  • Take a Read Across America Pledge by filling out this online form.
  • Plan some activities in your immediate home school or friend group.  Or maybe arrange an event for your community.  Head over to this website for some fun information to help you plan an event and/or special activities for the readers in your life.
  • Download an activity booklet that will get you headed in the right direction, along with artwork and other downloads.
  • Visit Read Across America’s Facebook page for inspiration.
  • Into hashtags? Use #ReadAcrossAmericaDay and #DrSeussDay on Instagram March 2nd.

I think everyone knows how important reading is on so many levels.  What better way for our children to learn this than by watching us read and/or asking them to join us in a few stories!
