Field trips are something we like to do a homeschool family.  It’s so much fun to find field trip options that are relevant to current topics in our curricula.  I must admit it was really cool to discover that October holds a national observance, National Go On A Field Trip Month.

By October, most of our children, public and homeschool, have been back in school for several weeks already, and in some cases a couple of months.  When they start getting squirmy at the table during school time, it’s time to start thinking about ways to break up the week a little bit.  And what better way to do that than with a field trip?  And when a national observance is involved and makes it even more legit!  Field trips are fun for anyone at any age!

Interested in incorporating some fun field trips for your kids? Here’s some ideas.

  •  The USS Lexington – This is a great way to learn a little bit about military history.
  • The Harbor Playhouse – It’s really a neat thing to go and watch a play performed by our very own locals. My family has gone to see Schoolhouse Rock Live and Treasure Island in the last two months.  It’s such a great experience!  And if you have a child interested in participating in theater performances, watch for up-and-coming auditions.
  • Padre Island National Seashore – A field trip here will get you in touch with a bit of nature.
  • Texas State Aquarium – Who doesn’t like learning all about everything Aquarium related?  We really enjoyed an afternoon there when we were studying Brazil because, at that time, the Aquarium had a really nice Amazon Rain Forest exhibit.  They are currently undergoing an expansion and we are anxious to see all the changes they have made.  It’s time for us to renew our family membership and check it out!
  • Welder Wildlife Foundation – We’ve gone on a field trip here with our homeschool group and it was a great time.  It is so special to learn about so many animals that are from our area.
  • Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History – The museum has homeschool days several times a month with different topics and projects kids can participate in. We joined the museum as a family, so the cost to participate in the classes is very minimal.
  • Art Museum of South Texas – Cultivate a budding artist in your family.
  • Selena Museum – Learn about Selena, the ‘Queen of Tejano.’
  • South Texas Botanical Gardens – Checkout this beautiful place to view local fauna.
  • Oso Bay Wetlands Preserve -This is another great field trip and opportunity for those who enjoy all things nature.
  • Corpus Christi Bay Trail – Take the family out and go bike riding together!
  • Texas Parks & Wildlife provides information if you are a family that likes to go Birding.  You’ll have to do a bit of reading and skimming through the page to find some fun options.
  • Heritage Park – This neat park has a touch of beautiful history present in all the old homes. After a quick phone call, I learned that some local businesses actually operate out of some of the old homes, but the public can walk through and take a peek. Heritage Park, in general, is pretty to walk through and a nice place to enjoy a picnic lunch. Some of the homes are available to rent for weddings, baby showers and the like.
  • In Heritage Park, you will find the Institute of Hispanic Culture.
  • Robert Wollman Planetarium at King High School is a great way to learn about astronomy. Be sure to check out their schedule, as they change the showings periodically and are only open to the public at certain times.
  • Archimedes Educational Cruise – This is a perfect trip for a large group and is a very worthwhile field trip.  I would highly suggest it if you have children who are interested in marine biology.  It offers quite a learning experience for all ages.

These are just a few of the many great options available to those of us who live in the Coastal Bend. I don’t know about you, but field trips are just plain fun and our family loves looking for new experiences! Maybe a few of these will be new for you!  What sort of field trips do you like to take with your family?  Do you have something new to share with me?
